Medicine Disposal & Environmental Health—A National Scheme Emerges
Ireland is launching a national Disposal of Unused Medicines Properly (DUMP) scheme to reduce environmental harm and improve safety. Pharmacies will serve as collection points for expired medicines.
Improper disposal of medicines poses serious risks. Antibiotics flushed down sinks contribute to antimicrobial resistance, while expired drugs in landfills contaminate soil and water JN. Research shows that over one-third of medicines in Ireland are discarded incorrectly.
The Irish Pharmacy Union is advocating for a nationwide DUMP scheme, with pharmacies as central hubs. Benefits include:
• Reduced risk of suicide and accidental poisoning
• Lower environmental contamination
• Safer disposal for patients and carers
The Environmental Protection Agency and EU law support this initiative, which is expected to roll out nationally in late 2025.
Hutano supports environmental health and safe practice. Encourage your patients and staff to dispose responsibly.
