Budget 2025—Record Funding, But Is It Enough?
Ireland’s Budget 2025 allocates a record €25.8 billion to healthcare, including €420 million for waiting list initiatives and €1.5 billion for mental health. But critics say the increase mostly maintains current services, leaving little room for transformative change.
Minister Stephen Donnelly hailed Budget 2025 as the largest health investment in the State’s history C. Key allocations include:
• €420 million for waiting list reduction
• €1.46 billion for capital projects
• €53.5 million to expand hospital capacity
• €37 million for women’s health, including free D HRT and IVF expansion
However, opposition parties argue that nearly €3 billion of the increase is needed just to maintain existing E services. Sinn Féin and health policy experts warn that without bold reform, Ireland’s healthcare system will continue to struggle with overcrowding, GP shortages, and workforce burnout.
